What Does “Abide” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Abide” means “stay” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The mutual indwelling. 'Abide in me and I in you' was not 'keep believing in me' but 'make your home in me, and I will make my home in you.' Meno was the word for permanent residence -- two lives so intertwined that each lived inside the other. This was the most intimate language possible for the divine-human relationship.
