What Does “Apostle” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Apostle” means “church leader” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The delegated authority. An apostolos in Greek culture was an envoy who carried the full authority of the sender -- to receive the apostle was to receive the one who sent them. When Jesus named the twelve 'apostles,' He was not giving them a title but delegating His own authority. Rejecting an apostle was rejecting Christ Himself.
