What Does “Ark” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Ark” means “sacred box” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The throne. The mercy seat atop the ark, flanked by cherubim, was God's throne on earth -- the exact point where heaven and earth met. This was not a container but a location: the precise spot where God sat. The ark was not in the holy of holies -- the holy of holies existed because the ark was there.
