Archaic KJV Word

What Does “Atonement” Mean in the Bible?

In the King James Bible, Atonement means reconciliation with God in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.

What Was Lost

The multidimensional unity. Kaphar held together what theologians have pulled apart: covering sin, ransoming the sinner, purifying the contaminated, and reconciling the estranged -- all in one act. The Day of Atonement did all of these simultaneously. Reducing atonement to one mechanism loses the others.
