What Does “Audience” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Audience” means “hearing” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The active, accountable dimension of hearing. 'In the audience of the people' meant 'within their hearing' -- they were actively listening, not passively sitting. To 'give audience' was to formally grant someone the right to be heard. The shift from action to crowd turned engaged listeners into passive spectators.
