What Does “Bewray” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Bewray” means “gives you away” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
Peter's unintentional self-exposure. His Galilean speech 'bewrayed' him -- it gave him away without his consent or intention. The word distinguished between deliberate betrayal and involuntary revelation. Peter did not betray himself (that was Judas's word); he bewrayed himself -- his own mouth exposed what he was trying to hide.
