What Does “Blessed” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Blessed” means “happy” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The prophetic declaration. When Jesus said 'Blessed are the poor in spirit,' He was not describing their emotional state. He was making a divine pronouncement -- declaring them recipients of God's favor in the manner of an Old Testament oracle. 'Happy' reduces a divine decree to a mood.
