What Does “Captive” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Captive” means “someone held back” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The exile experience. A captive was ripped from home, family, land, language, temple, and identity -- taken to a foreign land to serve foreign masters. 'Liberty to the captives' was not therapy language but liberation language: God was coming to break chains, open prison doors, and bring the exiled home.
