What Does “Chambering” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Chambering” means “sexual immorality” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The spatial metaphor for sexual sin. Chambering named the sin after the room -- the private chamber where propriety was abandoned. Paul's list 'not in chambering and wantonness' paired the location with the behavior. When the word died, the vivid image of sin-behind-closed-doors died with it.
