What Does “Comfort” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Comfort” means “console” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The strengthening. Isaiah 40:1 was not 'make my people feel better' but 'make my people strong again.' The exiles needed fortitude for the journey home, not sympathy. Comfort was arms around the shoulders to lift you up, not a pat on the back while you sat down.
