Archaic KJV Word

Dream

Modern equivalent: subconscious imagery

What Was Lost

The divine sender. In scripture, certain dreams were not produced by the sleeper's brain but sent by God -- they carried information the dreamer could not have known. Joseph's dreams predicted the future. Daniel's dreams revealed empires. These were not subconscious processing but divine broadcasts received during sleep.

Closest Survivor in Modern English

dream (still used but understood as brain processing rather than divine revelation)

Peak Usage (1611)

KJV Genesis 37:5 -- 'Joseph dreamed a dream'; Joel 2:28 -- 'Your old men shall dream dreams'

Died still used but psychologized (~1900)

Hebrew chalom ('divinely sent night vision/prophetic communication during sleep') was psychologized by Freud and Jung into subconscious processing. Dreams went from divine communication to brain chemistry.

What Replaced It

subconscious activity

Brain function; biblical dreams were deliberate divine communication

aspiration

'I have a dream' meaning; biblical dreams were received revelations, not personal hopes

REM sleep imagery

Neurological process; chalom was a channel God used to speak when the conscious mind was quiet
