What Does “Wine” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Wine” means “alcoholic beverage” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The eschatological joy. Wine was the symbol of the age to come -- the great banquet, the wedding feast of the Lamb, the day when God would 'destroy the covering cast over all peoples' (Isaiah 25:6-8). 'New wine in new wineskins' was about the bursting, uncontainable joy of God's kingdom arriving.
