Where Does the Bible First Mention Atonement?

The Bible first mentions atonement in Genesis 6:14, from the original word kaphar (כפר). God tells Noah to pitch the ark with 'kaphar'—the same word later used for covering sin in the sacrificial system. The ark that covers and protects foreshadows how atonement covers sin.

The Seed of Everything That Follows

Atonement is always about covering—something must stand between sin and judgment.
