Chiasmus / Literary Structure
The Chiastic Structure of Genesis 11:1-9
Genesis 11:1-9 (The Tower of Babel) is arranged as a chiasm— an ancient mirror pattern (A-B-C-B′-A′) in which ideas repeat in reverse order around a central pivot. The structure turns on its center: “THE LORD CAME DOWN TO SEE”. The Babel narrative is a tightly structured chiasm where human ambition to 'reach heaven' is met by God's descent, with the act of building as the center.
The Mirror Pattern
- A
The whole earth had one language
Genesis 11:1
- B
People settle in the land of Shinar
Genesis 11:2
- C
'Come, let us make bricks'
Genesis 11:3
- D
'Let us build a city and tower'
Genesis 11:4a
- X
THE LORD CAME DOWN TO SEE
Genesis 11:5
Central pivot — the emphasized point
- D'
'They have begun to build'
Genesis 11:6
- C'
'Come, let us confuse their language'
Genesis 11:7
- B'
People scattered over the earth
Genesis 11:8
- A'
The Lord confused the language of the whole earth
Genesis 11:9
Indentation shows the nesting toward the central pivot and back out — the hallmark of a chiasm.
Why the Structure Matters
In a chiasm, the author’s main point is placed at the center rather than the end. Reading Genesis 11:1-9 as a mirror pattern draws the eye to its pivot — “THE LORD CAME DOWN TO SEE” — as the key the passage turns on. Recognizing the structure changes how the passage is read and preached.
