Chiasmus / Literary Structure
The Chiastic Structure of Ps 19
Ps 19 (Psalm 19 — Creation and Torah) is arranged as a chiasm— an ancient mirror pattern (A-B-C-B′-A′) in which ideas repeat in reverse order around a central pivot. The structure turns on its center: “They are more desired than gold, sweeter than honey — the pivot”. Psalm 19 is a two-part psalm united by a prayer in vv. 12-14, forming a chiasm that pairs God's general revelation (creation) with his special revelation (Torah).
The Mirror Pattern
- A
The heavens declare God's glory — wordless proclamation
Ps 19:1-4a
- B
The sun runs its course — creation's order
Ps 19:4b-6
- C
The Torah of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul
Ps 19:7
- X
They are more desired than gold, sweeter than honey — the pivot
Ps 19:10
Central pivot — the emphasized point
- C'
By them your servant is warned; great reward in keeping them
Ps 19:11
- B'
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent — human limitation
Ps 19:12-13
- A'
May the words of my mouth be acceptable — human speech aligned with creation
Ps 19:14
Indentation shows the nesting toward the central pivot and back out — the hallmark of a chiasm.
Why the Structure Matters
In a chiasm, the author’s main point is placed at the center rather than the end. Reading Ps 19 as a mirror pattern draws the eye to its pivot — “They are more desired than gold, sweeter than honey — the pivot” — as the key the passage turns on. Recognizing the structure changes how the passage is read and preached.
