Archaic KJV Word

Confess

Modern equivalent: declare

What Was Lost

The concept of verbal alignment with God. To confess Jesus as Lord meant to say the same thing God says about Jesus -- a public act of agreement with divine reality. It was not admitting you did something wrong but declaring you stand with God's verdict about His Son.

Closest Survivor in Modern English

profess (retains the public declaration sense but lacks the 'same word as God' dimension)

Peak Usage (1611)

KJV Romans 10:9 -- 'If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus'

Died still used but narrowed (~1950)

Narrowed from homologeo ('say the same thing/agree with God') to 'admit wrongdoing,' making Romans 10:9 sound like admitting guilt rather than making a public declaration of agreement with God.

What Replaced It

admit

Reluctant disclosure; confess-as-homologeo was joyful public declaration

declare

One-directional announcement; confess meant aligning your speech with God's truth -- saying what God says

acknowledge

Passive recognition; confess was active, public, and binding
