What Was Lost
The totality of human flourishing. Shalom meant everything working as God designed it: bodies healthy, relationships whole, creation fruitful, justice established, the poor fed, the lonely welcomed. 'Peace I leave with you' was not 'I leave you a calm feeling' but 'I leave you total wholeness.'

Died still used but diminished (~1900)
Reduced from Hebrew shalom ('wholeness/completeness/flourishing/nothing broken, nothing missing') to mere absence of conflict. Peace became a negative (no war) rather than a positive (total well-being).
What Replaced It

Emotional state only; shalom encompassed physical health, economic stability, relational harmony, and spiritual wholeness
“ceasefire”
Temporary absence of violence; shalom was permanent, total flourishing
“tranquility”
Passive and individual; shalom was communal thriving -- an entire society functioning as designed
