Bible Chapter Summary

1 Corinthians 7 Summary

Marriage, Singleness, and Christian Conduct

Paul addresses questions about marriage and singleness. To avoid fornication, let each man have his own wife and each woman her own husband, with spouses owing each other due benevolence and not defrauding one another. Paul gives his preference for singleness but acknowledges it is a gift from God; if one cannot remain celibate, it is better to marry than to burn. For the married, Paul quotes the Lord's command that the wife not depart from her husband and the husband not put her away. For believers married to unbelievers, the unbelieving spouse is sanctified by the believing spouse. Paul instructs all to remain in their calling as the Lord has called them, whether circumcised or not, servant or free, married or single, as the time is short and the world passes away.
