Bible Chapter Summary

1 Samuel 16 Summary

David Anointed as King

The Lord directs Samuel to Jesse the Bethlehemite, saying He has provided a king among Jesse's sons. Samuel calls Jesse and his sons to a sacrifice at Bethlehem. When Jesse's sons pass before Samuel, the Lord rejects each of the first seven, teaching Samuel that He looks on the heart, not outward appearance. Samuel learns of Jesse's youngest son David, who is tending sheep. David is brought in, and the Lord directs Samuel to anoint him, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon David from that day forward. Meanwhile, the Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul and an evil spirit troubles him. Saul's servants suggest finding a skillful musician, and David is brought to serve Saul as his armourbearer, playing the harp to refresh him.
