Bible Chapter Summary
1 Samuel 31 Summary
Saul's Death and Final Humiliation
Israel falls before the Philistines at Mount Gilboa as the battle turns against Saul. Wounded by archers, Saul asks his armor-bearer to kill him, but when the bearer refuses, Saul takes his own life by the sword. His three sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua are slain, and his armor-bearer also dies. The Philistines discover Saul's body, decapitate him, strip his armor, and hang his corpse on the wall of Beth-shan in desecration. The men of Jabesh-gilead, moved by his fate, bravely retrieve Saul and his sons' bodies by night and give them honorable burial.
