2 Kings 25 Summary
Jerusalem's Fall and the Temple Destroyed
In the ninth year of Zedekiah's reign, Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem for two years until famine breaks the city; the king and his army flee but are captured in the plains of Jericho. Nebuchadnezzar's captain burns the temple and all houses of Jerusalem, breaks down the walls, and carries away most of the people to Babylon, leaving only the poor to work the land. The king's sons are slain before Zedekiah's eyes and his eyes are put out before he is bound and taken to Babylon. After appointing Gedaliah as governor, Ishmael assassinates him in the seventh month and the remaining people flee to Egypt, ending with a note of mercy: thirty-seven years later, Evil-merodach king of Babylon frees Jehoiachin from prison, speaks kindly to him, and grants him a continual allowance for life.
