2 Samuel 1 Summary

David Mourns Saul and Jonathan

A young man arrives at David's camp in Ziklag bearing news that Saul and Jonathan have fallen in battle at Mount Gilboa. The messenger claims to have slain the dying Saul at his own request and brought his crown and bracelet to David. David executes the messenger for striking the LORD's anointed, then leads the people in mourning, fasting, and weeping for Saul, Jonathan, and Israel's defeat. David composes an elaborate lamentation celebrating the valor of Saul and Jonathan and commanding that the Song of the Bow be taught to the children of Judah.
