Bible Chapter Summary
2 Samuel 7 Summary
The Davidic Covenant Through Nathan
Dwelling securely in his cedar house while the ark remains in curtains, David expresses his desire to build a temple for God. The prophet Nathan initially approves, but the LORD comes to Nathan that night with a divine message. God reminds David that He has never required a house but has walked with Israel in a tent and tabernacle since Egypt. Instead, the LORD promises to make David a great name and establish his kingdom and throne forever. His descendant will build God's house, and the LORD will be his father and he the LORD's son. If he commits iniquity, he will be chastened but never abandoned as Saul was. David humbly responds in prayer, acknowledging his unworthiness and praising the LORD's greatness and faithfulness to Israel.
