Bible Chapter Summary

Amos 1 Summary

Judgments on Foreign Nations

Amos pronounces the LORD's judgment against six nations. Damascus will be consumed by fire for threshing Gilead with iron instruments. Gaza is judged for carrying away captive peoples to deliver them to Edom. Tyrus will burn for delivering captives to Edom and forgetting the brotherly covenant. Edom faces judgment for pursuing his brother with the sword and keeping his wrath forever. The children of Ammon will burn for ripping up women with child of Gilead to enlarge their border. These judgments are announced in a refrain of 'for three transgressions and for four, I will not turn away the punishment.'
