Amos 9 Summary

Inescapable Judgment and Restoration Promise

Amos sees the LORD standing upon the altar, commanding to smite the lintel of the door so the posts shake, and cut off the heads of all people, slaying the last with the sword so none can flee or escape. No hiding place exists: though they dig into hell, his hand shall take them; though they climb to heaven, he shall bring them down; though they hide in the top of Carmel, he shall search and take them out; though they hide in the bottom of the sea, a serpent shall bite them at his command; though they go into captivity before their enemies, the sword shall slay them. The LORD's eyes are set upon them for evil, not for good. Yet the book closes with restoration: the LORD will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. In that day he will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, close up the breaches, and raise up his ruins as in days of old. Israel shall possess the remnant of Edom and all heathen called by the LORD's name, and the plowman shall overtake the reaper, the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and the LORD will restore his captive people to their land forever.
