Bible Chapter Summary

Deuteronomy 3 Summary

Conquest of Bashan and Transjordan Division

Moses recounts Israel's defeat of Og king of Bashan at Edrei, where the LORD delivered Og and all his people into their hands, resulting in the capture of sixty fortified cities across the region of Argob and the complete destruction of their inhabitants. The conquered Transjordanian territory — stretching from the river Arnon to Mount Hermon — was then distributed by Moses to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with each division's boundaries carefully described. Moses charged the Transjordanian warriors to cross over armed with their Israelite brethren until the rest of the land was possessed, and he also encouraged Joshua with the assurance that the LORD would fight for Israel in the battles ahead. The chapter closes with Moses recounting his personal petition to enter Canaan, which the LORD refused, instead directing him to view the land from the top of Pisgah and to commission Joshua as his successor.
