Bible Chapter Summary
Deuteronomy 5 Summary
Moses Restates the Ten Commandments
Moses assembles all Israel and recounts the covenant the LORD made with the people at Horeb, emphasizing that this covenant was made with the living generation, not merely their ancestors. He then rehearses the Ten Commandments as spoken directly by God out of the fire — covering exclusive worship of the LORD, the prohibition of idols and vain use of God's name, Sabbath observance grounded in Israel's deliverance from Egypt, honor of parents, and prohibitions against murder, adultery, theft, false witness, and coveting. After the people, terrified by the fire and God's voice, asked Moses to serve as mediator, the LORD affirmed their response was well-said, expressed a longing that they would always fear Him and keep His commandments, and commissioned Moses to receive and relay all further statutes so that Israel might live and prosper in the land they were about to possess.
