Esther 1 Summary

King Ahasuerus Deposes Vashti

King Ahasuerus of Persia holds a grand feast displaying his wealth and power for 180 days, followed by a seven-day banquet in Shushan for all people. On the seventh day, when the king's heart is merry with wine, he commands Queen Vashti to appear before him wearing her royal crown, but she refuses his commandment. The king consults his wise men about the law, and Memucan advises that Vashti be deposed lest her refusal embolden wives throughout the kingdom to despise their husbands. The king issues a decree removing Vashti as queen and commanding that every man bear rule in his own house.
