Bible Chapter Summary
Exodus 6 Summary
God Renews His Covenant Promise to Moses
The LORD reassures Moses that He will act with a strong hand against Pharaoh and drive Israel out of Egypt, grounding His promise in His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and revealing His name JEHOVAH as not previously made known to the patriarchs. He delivers a sevenfold pledge to Israel — to bring them out, redeem them, take them as His people, and give them the land of Canaan — but the Israelites, crushed by their bondage, do not listen. When commanded again to approach Pharaoh, Moses protests his own inadequacy, describing himself as one of "uncircumcised lips." The chapter also interrupts the narrative with a genealogical record tracing the lineages of Reuben, Simeon, and especially Levi down through Amram and Jochebed to Moses and Aaron, establishing the authoritative identity of the two men commissioned to lead Israel out of Egypt.
