Exodus 8 Summary

Three Plagues, Pharaoh's Hardened Heart

Exodus 8 records three successive plagues upon Egypt: frogs, lice, and swarms of flies. Aaron stretches out his rod at God's command and frogs overrun the land; Egypt's magicians replicate this plague but cannot reverse it, and Pharaoh temporarily promises to release Israel if Moses entreats the LORD to remove the frogs—only to harden his heart once relief comes. The plague of lice follows, produced when Aaron strikes the dust of the land; the magicians fail to duplicate it and acknowledge "this is the finger of God," yet Pharaoh remains unmoved. God then sends grievous swarms of flies on Egypt while conspicuously sparing the land of Goshen where Israel dwells, demonstrating His sovereign distinction between His people and Egypt; Pharaoh again negotiates and then breaks his word, hardening his heart and refusing to let the people go.
