Bible Chapter Summary

Genesis 19 Summary

Sodom Destroyed, Lot Delivered

Two angels arrive in Sodom at evening and are welcomed into Lot's house, but the men of the city surround the house demanding Lot hand over his guests; the angels strike the mob with blindness and urge Lot to gather his family and flee before the LORD's imminent destruction. At dawn the angels physically lead Lot, his wife, and his two daughters out of the city; Lot is permitted to flee to the small nearby city of Zoar rather than the mountains, and once he arrives there, the LORD rains brimstone and fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah, overthrowing the cities and all the plain, while Lot's wife, who looked back, becomes a pillar of salt. Abraham witnesses the destruction from a distance, and the text notes that God remembered Abraham when He delivered Lot. After fearing to remain in Zoar, Lot and his two daughters dwell in a cave in the mountains, where the daughters, believing all other men are gone from the earth, cause their father to drink wine and lie with him on successive nights; the sons born from these unions become the ancestors of the Moabites and the Ammonites.
