Bible Chapter Summary
Genesis 25 Summary
Abraham's Death, Ishmael's Line, Jacob and Esau
Genesis 25 opens with Abraham taking a second wife, Keturah, who bears him six sons, though Abraham gives all his inheritance to Isaac and sends the sons of his concubines eastward with gifts. Abraham dies at 175 years old and is buried by Isaac and Ishmael in the cave of Machpelah alongside Sarah; afterward God blesses Isaac. The chapter then records the twelve sons of Ishmael and his death at 137 years, followed by the generations of Isaac: Rebekah, who was barren, conceives twins after Isaac's prayer to the LORD, and God reveals to her that two nations are in her womb and that the elder will serve the younger. The twins Esau and Jacob are born, and the chapter closes with Esau despising his birthright by selling it to Jacob for a meal of bread and lentil pottage.
