Genesis 32 Summary

Jacob Wrestles with God at Peniel

As Jacob journeys homeward, angels of God meet him at a place he names Mahanaim. Anticipating a reunion with his brother Esau — who is approaching with four hundred men — Jacob is seized with fear: he divides his household and flocks into two bands as a precaution, sends a generous series of gift droves ahead to appease Esau, and prays earnestly to God for deliverance, appealing to the divine promises made to his fathers. That same night, after sending his family and possessions across the ford of Jabbok, Jacob is left alone and wrestles with a mysterious man until daybreak; when the man cannot overpower Jacob, he dislocates Jacob's thigh, yet Jacob refuses to release him until he receives a blessing. The man declares that Jacob's name shall henceforth be Israel, because he has striven with God and men and prevailed; Jacob names the place Peniel, testifying that he has seen God face to face and survived, and he departs limping at sunrise.
