Bible Chapter Summary
Genesis 36 Summary
Genealogies and Rulers of Esau's Descendants
Genesis 36 records the generations of Esau, who is identified as Edom. Esau took Canaanite wives and fathered sons in Canaan, but departed from his brother Jacob because their combined wealth was too great for the land to support, and he settled in mount Seir. The chapter then provides three layered genealogical lists: the sons and grandsons of Esau along with the dukes descended from each of his wives; the sons and dukes of the Horite inhabitants of Seir, who were in the land before Esau's line; and a succession of eight kings who reigned in Edom before any king ruled over Israel. The chapter closes with a final enumeration of the dukes of Edom according to their families and settlements, reaffirming that Esau is the father of the Edomites.
