Bible Chapter Summary
Genesis 38 Summary
Judah, Tamar, and Twin Sons
Judah separates from his brothers and settles among Canaanites, marrying the daughter of Shuah and fathering three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er is slain by the LORD for wickedness, and Onan is likewise slain for refusing to fulfill his levirate duty to his widowed sister-in-law Tamar; Judah then withholds his third son Shelah from Tamar, sending her back to her father's house. When Judah travels to Timnath after his own wife's death, Tamar disguises herself and Judah, not recognizing her, pledges his signet, bracelets, and staff in exchange for relations with her, and she conceives. When Tamar's pregnancy is discovered and Judah demands she be executed, she produces his pledge items as proof of the father's identity; Judah acknowledges them and confesses that she is more righteous than he, since he had withheld Shelah from her. Tamar gives birth to twin boys, Pharez and Zarah, with the midwife marking the firstborn by a scarlet thread in an unexpected reversal at delivery.
