Bible Chapter Summary

Genesis 43 Summary

Brothers Return to Egypt with Benjamin

As the famine intensifies and their Egyptian grain runs out, Jacob's sons cannot return to buy more food without Benjamin, as the Egyptian ruler had demanded. Judah personally pledges surety for Benjamin's safety, and Jacob reluctantly consents, sending his sons with a gift of choice products, double money, and Benjamin. Upon arriving in Egypt and being brought into Joseph's house, the brothers grow fearful that the returned money from their previous trip will be used as a pretext against them, but the steward reassures them and releases Simeon. When Joseph arrives, he is so moved at the sight of his full brother Benjamin that he withdraws privately to weep, then composes himself and hosts a feast at which Benjamin receives a portion five times greater than his brothers', and they all drink and are merry together.
