Bible Chapter Summary

Isaiah 36 Summary

Sennacherib's siege of Jerusalem

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib of Assyria comes up against Judah's defended cities and takes them. He sends Rabshakeh with a great army to Jerusalem, who stands by the conduit taunting Hezekiah. Rabshakeh speaks to the delegates, saying Hezekiah's trust in Egypt is vain and accusing Hezekiah of removing the LORD's high places. He boasts of Assyria's might and strength, claiming none can deliver from the Assyrian king's hand. Rabshakeh cries in the Jews' language to the people on the wall, mocking Hezekiah and bidding them make peace with Assyria. He challenges whether the gods of other nations have delivered them, demanding whether the LORD will deliver Jerusalem. The king's delegates return to Hezekiah with rent clothes, reporting all the words of Rabshakeh.
