Bible Chapter Summary

Isaiah 47 Summary

Babylon's Humiliation and Fall

The Lord commands the virgin daughter of Babylon to come down and sit in dust, for she shall no more be called tender and delicate. She must uncover her nakedness and have her shame seen as the Lord takes vengeance and will not meet her as a man. The Lord declares Himself as the Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Babylon sits silent in darkness for she shall no more be called the lady of kingdoms, having shown her people no mercy but laid a heavy yoke upon them. Though Babylon said she would be a lady forever and did not remember the end of it, two things shall come upon her in one day: loss of children and widowhood, despite her sorceries and enchantments. Her trusted wickedness shall bring unexpected evil and desolation upon her, and all her merchants and counselors shall be as stubble burned by fire.
