Jeremiah 19 Summary

The Broken Potter's Bottle and Valley of Slaughter

God commands Jeremiah to obtain a potter's earthen bottle and go to the valley of the son of Hinnom, where he proclaims that God will bring evil upon that place for forsaking Him and burning incense to other gods and filling the place with innocent blood. They built high places of Baal to burn their sons as offerings, which God never commanded or desired. The valley shall be called the valley of slaughter; God will make void the counsel of Judah and cause them to fall by the sword. Bodies will become meat for fowls and beasts, and the city will become desolate and a hissing. In the siege, they will eat the flesh of sons and daughters. Jeremiah then breaks the bottle before the people, declaring that God will break this people and city as a potter's vessel that cannot be made whole, burying them in Tophet.
