Bible Chapter Summary

Jeremiah 22 Summary

Exhortation to Kings and Judgment on Jehoiakim

Jeremiah is commanded to go to the house of the king of Judah and demand that the king and his servants execute judgment, deliver the oppressed, and cease violence against strangers and the vulnerable. If they obey, the Davidic dynasty will continue; if they refuse, the house will become desolate. The chapter then pronounces specific judgment on kings Shallum and Jehoiakim: Shallum will die in captivity and never return to Judah, while Jehoiakim, who built by unrighteousness and oppression, will be buried like a donkey and his name forgotten, and his son Coniah will be childless and without prosperity.
