Bible Chapter Summary

Joshua 21 Summary

Levitical Cities Allotted Across Israel

The heads of the Levite families approach Eleazar the priest and Joshua at Shiloh, invoking the LORD's command through Moses that cities with surrounding pasturelands be given to the Levites. By lot, forty-eight cities with their suburbs are distributed among the three Levitical clans: the Kohathites (including the priestly families of Aaron) receive thirteen cities, the remaining Kohathites ten, the Gershonites thirteen, and the Merarites twelve — drawn from territories across all the tribes of Israel, with six of these cities designated as cities of refuge. The chapter closes with a sweeping theological affirmation: the LORD fulfilled every promise sworn to the fathers, giving Israel the land, granting rest from all enemies, and allowing nothing of His word to fail.
