Bible Chapter Summary
Judges 1 Summary
Israel's Conquest and Incomplete Victories
Following Joshua's death, the Israelites inquire of the LORD who should lead the fight against the Canaanites, and the LORD appoints the tribe of Judah, who allies with Simeon. Judah's campaigns achieve notable successes — including the defeat of Adoni-bezek at Bezek, the capture of Jerusalem, Hebron, and Debir (where Caleb's daughter Achsah is given to Othniel as a reward), and the destruction of Zephath — while the LORD is recorded as being with Judah throughout. However, the chapter pivots to a sobering catalogue of failures: tribe after tribe — Benjamin, Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan — fails to fully drive out the Canaanite inhabitants of their allotted territories, often allowing them to remain as tributaries or even being pushed back by them, leaving Canaanites dwelling alongside Israel throughout the land.
