Leviticus 19 Summary
Laws of Holiness and Neighborly Love
The LORD commands Moses to address all Israel with a sweeping call to holiness, grounding the charge in God's own holy nature. The chapter then delivers a broad collection of laws covering reverence for parents, Sabbath observance, prohibition of idols, honest treatment of neighbors, gleaning rights for the poor and the stranger, just weights and measures, and proper ritual conduct. Ethical commands include prohibitions against stealing, false swearing, defrauding, talebearing, and hatred, culminating in the injunction to love one's neighbor as oneself and to treat the resident alien with equal love. Additional statutes address forbidden mixtures, fruit trees in Canaan, mourning rites, divination, respect for the elderly, and the trespass offering required when a man lies with a betrothed bondservant, with the chapter closing by calling Israel to observe all God's statutes and judgments.
