Bible Chapter Summary
Luke 14 Summary
Humility, True Invitation, and the Cost of Discipleship
At a Pharisee's house on the Sabbath, Jesus heals a man with dropsy and teaches about humility by instructing guests not to seek the highest seats. He tells the host to invite the poor and afflicted rather than friends and rich neighbors, as such charity will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. Through the parable of the great supper, Jesus shows that those bidden first make excuses while the poor are invited in. He teaches that disciples must hate family and self, bear their cross, and count the cost, warning that salt which has lost its savor is worthless.
