Bible Chapter Summary
Luke 3 Summary
John the Baptist preaches repentance
John begins preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins by the Jordan River, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah. He warns the crowds not to presume on their descent from Abraham, calling them to produce fruits worthy of repentance, and teaches that God will judge those who bear no good fruit. When all the people were baptized, Jesus also came and was baptized, and the Holy Ghost descended upon him as the Father's voice declared him his beloved Son. Jesus's genealogy then traces him back through the patriarchs to Adam and God.
