Bible Chapter Summary

Numbers 1 Summary

The First Census of Israel's Tribes

On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Exodus, the LORD commands Moses in the wilderness of Sinai to take a census of all Israelite males twenty years old and upward who are able to go to war, enrolling them by tribe with the assistance of Aaron and one appointed leader from each tribe. Moses and Aaron carry out the count tribe by tribe, and the totals for the twelve tribes (with Joseph counted through Ephraim and Manasseh) sum to 603,550 men fit for military service. The tribe of Levi is explicitly exempted from this census by divine command; instead, the Levites are appointed to serve as custodians of the tabernacle, responsible for its transport, assembly, and guard—encamping around it as a protective buffer so that no unauthorized person approaches and divine wrath does not fall on the congregation. The chapter closes by recording that the children of Israel obeyed all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
