Bible Chapter Summary

Numbers 12 Summary

Miriam and Aaron Challenge Moses

Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses on two grounds: his marriage to an Ethiopian woman, and a broader challenge to his unique prophetic authority, claiming that God has spoken through them as well. The LORD summons all three to the tabernacle, descends in a pillar of cloud, and rebukes Aaron and Miriam, declaring that unlike other prophets who receive visions and dreams, Moses is uniquely faithful and speaks with God directly, "mouth to mouth." God's anger departs and Miriam is struck with leprosy; Aaron confesses their sin and Moses intercedes with a brief, earnest prayer for her healing. The LORD decrees that Miriam be shut outside the camp for seven days, after which she is restored and the Israelites resume their journey, departing from Hazeroth to the wilderness of Paran.
