Numbers 18 Summary
Priestly Duties, Portions, and Tithes
The LORD addresses Aaron directly, establishing that Aaron, his sons, and the Levites shall bear responsibility for the sanctuary and its service, with strict boundaries separating priestly duties from Levitical ones and forbidding unauthorized persons from drawing near. God then enumerates the portions given to Aaron and his priestly household as their perpetual due: the most holy offerings, heave offerings, wave offerings, firstfruits, firstborn animals, and everything devoted in Israel — sealed as a covenant of salt forever. Because the priests and Levites receive no territorial inheritance in Canaan, the LORD declares Himself Aaron's inheritance, and grants all the tithes of Israel to the Levites as compensation for their tabernacle service. Finally, the LORD instructs Moses to command the Levites that they in turn must present a tithe of the tithes they receive — the best tenth — as a heave offering to Aaron the priest, and this offering must come from the choicest portion so that no sin is incurred.
