Bible Chapter Summary
Numbers 20 Summary
Deaths, Meribah, and Edom's Refusal
The congregation arrives at Kadesh in the desert of Zin, where Miriam dies and is buried. When the people complain about the lack of water, God instructs Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses instead strikes it twice with his rod; water flows abundantly, yet God rebukes both Moses and Aaron for failing to sanctify Him before Israel, barring them from entering the Promised Land — this place is called Meribah. Moses then sends messengers to the king of Edom requesting peaceful passage through his territory, recounting Israel's history and promising to stay on the king's highway, but Edom refuses and threatens military force, so Israel turns away. The congregation journeys to Mount Hor, where God commands Aaron's priestly garments to be transferred to his son Eleazar; Aaron then dies on the mountaintop, and all Israel mourns him for thirty days.
