Bible Chapter Summary

Numbers 6 Summary

Nazirite Vow and Priestly Blessing

The LORD instructs Moses on the law of the Nazirite, a voluntary vow of consecration open to both men and women, requiring abstention from all products of the vine, the growing of uncut hair, and avoidance of contact with any dead body for the full duration of the vow. Detailed regulations are provided for ritual defilement — if a Nazirite is accidentally defiled by a sudden death nearby, he must shave his head, present offerings for atonement, and restart his period of separation. Upon the successful completion of the vow, the Nazirite presents a prescribed series of offerings at the tabernacle, shaves his consecrated hair into the fire of the peace offering, and is then released from the terms of the vow. The chapter closes with the LORD giving Aaron and his sons the words of the Aaronic benediction, a three-part priestly blessing by which they are to bless the children of Israel in the name of the LORD.
